Creating a Family Kitchen Band
Kids love making noise and making music. Let them have the fun of creating their own instruments using kitchen utensils (and other items you think would be good) and then put on a show! Here is your Activity Guide for this adventure.
Preparation Time: 30-45 minutes Age Range: 3+ (with adult supervision) Group Size: 2-8 people
Materials Needed:
Empty plastic containers and jars
Dried beans, rice, or pasta
Rubber bands of various sizes
Empty paper towel/toilet paper rolls
Empty tin cans (cleaned, edges smoothed)
Wax paper
Construction paper
Decorative materials (stickers, paint, markers)
Tape and glue
Wooden spoons or chopsticks
Step 1: Instrument Creation (20-30 minutes)
Shakers/Maracas
Fill plastic containers partially with dried beans or rice
Secure lids tightly with tape
Decorate the outside
String Instruments
Stretch rubber bands around empty tissue boxes or plastic containers
Try different band sizes for varied sounds
Drums
Clean tin cans or use sturdy plastic containers
Cover one end with wax paper (for bongos)
Use wooden spoons as drumsticks
Rain Sticks
Close one end of paper towel roll
Add small amounts of rice
Create a zig-zag inside with small pins (adult task)
Seal other end and decorate
Step 2: Sound Exploration (10 minutes)
Have each family member test their instruments
Experiment with different playing techniques
Discuss which sounds are high/low, soft/loud
Step 3: Band Practice (15+ minutes)
Choose a simple song everyone knows
Assign different rhythm parts
Start with a basic beat and layer instruments
Take turns being the conductor
Try creating your own simple melodies
